The Animas River

Upper Animas Valley to Durango

"Rio de las Animas Perdidas"

The Animas River also known originally in Spanish as “Rio de las Animas Perdidas”, “The River of Lost Souls.” The Animas is Colorado’s largest and longest freestone river (undammed). Mild winters keep this amazing river fishable virtually year round. Due to its freestone nature fish in this river are known to be elusive and tight lipped. This has led quite a few fish to grow to epic proportions. These aren’t just your run of the mill pellet fed stocked trout either. The Animas’ prolific bug life and baitfish give hungry browns and rainbows plenty of protein to grow. These fish have serious muscle and will test your reel and fish fighting abilities. Another amazing feature of the Animas is its varied water types. From the slow winding bends of the oxbows to the raging rapids below 32nd Street there is beat for every angler.
