Rio Grande River

Texas Creek to Del Norte

Fishing in "The Last Great Place"

Fishing the Rio Grande should be on every anglers bucket list!  Starting in early April the river awakens from its frozen winter slumber. Streamers and BIG stonefly/caddis nymphs are gobbled up by trout hungry to put on a feed. Conditions can be variable in the spring but one can be assured they will have the river to themselves. Spring is also my favorite time because floating is always on the table and we do not have to worry about water temps!

As summer sets in and the high sun warms up the water our prolific hatches begin! In the height of this summer season, we see hatches of stoneflies, salmonflies, caddis, PMDs and drakes.  Because of this, the fishing is mostly a large dry fly game with lots of eager brown trout in the 12 to 18 inch range that are willing to crush well presented bug.  There are even a few bigger browns and rainbows that lurk the depths of the Rio that venture to the surface when the hatches are strong.
